Distinguishing between LVT Co-Extrusion and Hot Pressing Techniques

LVT flooring, also known as Luxury Vinyl Tile flooring, has gained immense popularity in recent years due to its durability, affordability, and realistic appearance. The manufacturing process of LVT involves various techniques to create a high-quality product. Two common methods used in the production of LVT are co-extrusion and hot pressing. While both techniques result in a finished LVT product, there are distinct differences between them. In this article, we will explore the dissimilarities between LVT co-extrusion and hot pressing techniques.

Co-extrusion is a process that involves the simultaneous extrusion of multiple layers of materials. In the case of LVT flooring, this process combines a layer of vinyl backing, a printed decorative film layer, a wear layer, and a clear protective layer. These layers are fused together under high heat and pressure to create a single, solid piece of flooring.

On the other hand, hot pressing is a technique that involves applying heat and pressure to a preassembled stack of layers. In the case of LVT flooring, the layers typically include a vinyl backing, a printed decorative film layer, and a wear layer. These layers are assembled and then subjected to high heat and pressure, which causes them to bond together and form a cohesive flooring product.

The manufacturing speed and efficiency also vary between co-extrusion and hot pressing techniques. Co-extrusion is generally considered a faster and more efficient process, as it allows for simultaneous extrusion of multiple layers. This leads to higher production rates, making co-extrusion a preferred choice for large-scale manufacturing. Hot pressing, on the other hand, involves assembling the layers before subjecting them to heat and pressure, which can be a slower and more labor-intensive process.

The hot press is more durable than Co-extrusion, but the price is more expensive.
